Rehersal: 2 hours per
day x 3 days per week x six weeks = 36 hours Preparing for a Sym Winds Concert. x Five concerts in a school year =180 hours
per year. x 4 years = 720 hours total.
Practicing: 1 hour per
day x six days per week x fifteen weeks = 90 hours. + 1 lesson per week at 1 hour per lesson x 13
lessons per semester = 13 hours of lessons.
90 + 13 = 103 hours of prep per jury.
1 jury each semester x 7 juries = 721hours of regular practice.
Recital Practice: 2
hours per day x six days per week x 10 we
eks = 20
hours. + 4 hours per day x six days per
week for 1 week =24 hours. 20 + 24 = 44
hours cramming for the recital.
Miscellaneous: 2 hours
to choose and buy dress. + 1 hour of reserving halls and coordinating dress
rehearsal times. + 4 hours researching
and writing program notes. + 2 hours making, printing and putting up signs. + 2 hours before the concert getting dressed,
tuning, setting up programs, and general panic. = 11 hours miscellaneous
concert prep
Recital: 3 semesters
regular practicing x 103 hours = 206. +
1 semester recital practice = 250 hours recital practice. + 11 hours misc = 261 hours to prepare a
senior recital.
Grand Totals: 720 hours of concert rehersal + 721 hours of
regular practice + 44 hours recital cramming + 11 hours of concert prep = 1496
1496 hours of music
making, practicing, learning, rehearsing, over an entire college career, not
counting academic or non-major instrument class and homework, all leading up to
a one hour senior recital, to show off everything you’ve been working
toward. Now how’s that for a senior sem
project?
